The possible harmful outcome of a hazard is a risk. For example, hazardous chemicals carry a risk of damage to skin or lungs if they come in contact with a person.

In risk management, we aim to eliminate and minimise the risk of any hazards which could result in harm. To do so, we have to assess the risk by cross-referencing the likelihood and the consequence of harm occurring. This assessment is completed by using Winslow’s standard Risk Assessment Matrix.
