Once a hazard is identified and its risk has been assessed, any risks must be controlled. Risk control measures are used to eliminate or minimise risk as far as is reasonably practicable. Controls are commensurate with the level of risk and are developed according to priorities established by the Health & Safety Hazards Register.

Hazards with a High risk level (or a score of 15–25) require the most urgent action, and must be controlled.

Controls are developed according to the Hierarchy of Controls, seen on the next screen. The Hierarchy of Controls ranks risk control measures in order of effectiveness. The most effective and highest priority measure is Elimination, where the hazard is removed completely. If this is not possible, move down the hierarchy and attempt to implement the next control type or a combination of controls.]]>
