A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a safety planning tool that identifies the hazards and risks of high risk construction work, documents the control measures necessary to manage those risks, and outlines who has responsibility to ensure controls are implemented. The SWMS should describe to workers, in clear terms, how risks from the work will be effectively controlled to enable the work to be done safely.

Task based Safe Work Method Statements shall be completed and signed by all personnel specific to any project and the relevant site supervisor shall inspect and approve the SWMS prior to works starting. The SWMS should take into account all potential hazards that arise from day to day tasks.
